Mediums are where the generic advice starts to run out, and I will be straight with you about that. Two mediums with the same designation on paper can run on completely different cultures: one quiet and programmed, another political in ways that change the daily calculus of everything from the TV room to the chow line. Structurally you can expect cell housing, controlled movement, longer sentences, and a yard where social geography matters.

The mechanics still work the same as everywhere: counts, commissary, stamps as currency, program waitlists, FSA credits for those who qualify. What changes is the margin for error. At a medium, the advice "keep to yourself and do your program" stops being a platitude and becomes an actual daily discipline.

For families: expect stricter visiting procedure, slower mail, and more lockdown days that eat scheduled visits without notice. Do not read a week of silence as catastrophe. The boring explanation, a lockdown or a broken phone room, is usually the right one.
